Consultation meeting of the African Institution Initiatives (AII)

From 27-28 April 2016, at Grand-Bassam, Côte d’Ivoire, the CSRS will organize a consultation meeting, which will bring together all the consortia funded by the African Institution Initiatives (AII) funded by the Wellcome Trust since 2009.

We are at the completion point of the African Institution Initiatives (AII) funded bythe Wellcome Trust since 2009. After this experience for many African institutions involved directly or indirectly in this initiative, it appears crucial to assess the process, the achievements in terms of strengthening individual and institutional capacity for better health research in African. That is why this consultation meeting, which will bring together all the consortia funded by the AII/ WT and partners is an opportunity to sustain the achievements.

The AII had a significant challenges to bring together research institutions, universities in order to meet international capacity in research, mainly to meet institutions expectations in health research. The process was monitored and evaluated internally on capacity by RAND Europe, governance by KPMG, and finances by Deloitte.

It’s important to note that the support from Northern partners allowed the African institutions to share experience and to be more internationally recognized and positioned. This meeting will give an opportunity to present achievements to peers, WT, institutions promoting research excellence in African and decision makers (such as African Union, Regional Economic organization, African Academy of Science, donors etc.). We will in the position to share common lessons and ideas to promote research excellence in resource-limited environments and plan next steps and inform DELTAS initiative. It is clear that much progress has been made in facilitating research training, supporting research projects and building research management capacity. Progress was done but some challenges remain.

Thus this consultation meeting aims to:-

(i)Discuss achievements in science;

(ii)Share experiences and learning in capacity building;

(iii)Engage with decision makers and funders for future health research challenges

(iv)Strengthen the established AII network

Expected output

The following issues will be addressed by the consortia in their feedback:

  • Capacity strengthening achievements;
  • What did not work well;
  • Institutional support and constraints;
  • What was good and what could have been better in terms of Wellcome Trust support and engagement;
  • The prospects for the consortia five years from now;
  • Opportunities for the researchers funded under AII;
  • If starting again what would you do differently?
